What is this calculator?
Height-normalized mass index related to BMI in some age contexts. The formula, a worked example, and a reference table are below. Results are for education only, not medical advice.
How it works
Ponderal Index (kg/m³) = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)³.
Example
70 kg, 1.75 m → PI = 70 ÷ (1.75)³ ≈ 13.1 kg/m³.
Reference Table
| Value | Meaning |
|---|---|
| PI vs BMI | Different height exponent |
| Neonatal use | Sometimes reported for infants |
| Adults | Less common than BMI in clinics |
FAQ
Why use PI?
In some age groups PI behaves differently than BMI; clinical context decides.
Same inputs as BMI?
Weight and height, but cubed height changes the scale.
Interpretation?
Compare to literature for the intended population.
Pediatrics?
Always use growth charts for interpretation.
